Parliament Committee Shifts Constitution Conference Dates

Members of the Constitution Parliamentary Select Committee (COPAC) met in Harare Tuesday and agreed to move the second All-Stakeholders Conference to the third week of October to give donors time to discuss funding.

COPAC co-chairman Douglas Mwonzora of the Movement for Democratic Change formation of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said the postponement will also give participants enough time to prepare for the conference.

The committee also met with senior police officers to discuss security matters.

President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai are expected to officially open the conference in a bid to discourage their supporters from engaging in violence during the indaba as their parties remain poles apart over the draft charter.

Mwonzora said the committee members also discussed various issues including the type of documents to be tabled at the conference.

Co-chairman Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana of Zanu PF, who also attended the meeting, said they have until Friday for political parties and civic organizations to submit the names of conference participants in order for them to start the registration process.
