Zimbabwe's Look East Economic Partnership With China Yields Scant Results


Economists say that despite a number of agreements between Zimbabwe and China for the rehabilitation of mines, electric power systems and other infrastructure, very little has materialized in the way of tangible results

President Robert Mugabe drew attention in 2003 when he announced his Look East Policy turning Zimbabwe towards China and other Asian nations as economic partners and away from the West.

Now that Zimbabwe is re-engaging with the United States, Europe and other Western countries, VOA Studio 7 reporter Gibbs Dube examines the Look East policy and finds that it has yielded no meaningful results beyond the signature of several trade agreements.
