BBC Journalist Hit With New Charges on Release From Police Custody

British Broadcasting Cooperation’s classical music presenter, Petroc Trelawney, who was arrested last Thursday in Bulawayo for violating conditions of his visa, was released from police custody today but the immigration department quickly moved in to press new charges of “violating conditions under which the visitors’ entry certificate has been issued.”

Trelawney’s release followed a High Court application Tuesday evening for a release order as he had remained in police custody despite the prosecution’s decision to drop charges laid against him on Monday.

Trelawney’s lawyer Munyaradzi Nzarayapenga told VOA reporter Sithandekile Mhlanga his client’s trial begins Thursday.
