Zimbabwe Marks African Human Rights Day Under Cloud of New Crisis

An emissary of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu of Cape Town, South Africa, Wednesday urged Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to resolve their political differences speedily for the good of Zimbabwe.

Dean Rowan Smith issued the appeal today during observations of African Human Rights Day in Harare, as VOA Studio 7 correspondent Thomas Chiripasi reported.

The scant progress on human Rights achieved in the past eight months could be washed away by continued instability in the troubled national unity government, Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum Executive Director Abel Chikomo warned.

Chikomo told Patience Rusere that Zimbabweans remain deprived of basic rights like health care and education and the judiciary stands in the way of restoring the rule of law.
