On Same Road Where Zimbabwe PM's Wife Died, Another Crash Kills 30

Zimbabwean authorities said Thursday that 30 people died when a bus veered off a highway between Harare and Masvingo late Wednesday and plunged into a river.

Police said another 46 were injured in the crash caused when a tire on the bus burst, sending the vehicle into the Munyati River.

The crash occurred on the same highway where Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's wife Susan died in a two-vehicle collision on March 6. The latest accident took place near the town of Furtherstone, some 119 kilometers from Harare, 36 miles south of the location where a truck veered out of its lane and hit the vehicle in which the Tsvangirai's were traveling.

Police opened a post at Chivhu Hospital to assist relatives of those killed in the crash. They said all of the injured had been transported to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare.

Zimbabwe Republic Police Spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena told reporter Blessing Zulu of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that many of the country's roads are in bad condition and that drivers who exceed the speed limit are taking their lives in their hands.
