Amid Widespread Shortages, Zimbabwe Waives Duty on Basic Commodities

The Zimbabwean government said Monday that it would waive customs duty on imports of basic goods for six months through June, in a bid to relieve widespread shortages.

The affected commodities included rice, cooking oil, flour, salt and margarine, among others. The government said it will review the program if domestic production picks up.

Economist Godfrey Kanyenze told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that he welcomed the policy shift, but added that as such goods will be priced in hard currency they will remain out of reach of many Zimbabweans.
