Hundreds Turn Out To Bury Slain Zimbabwe Opposition Activist

More than a thousand members of Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change turned out on Tuesday in Banket, Mashonaland West, for the burial of slain MDC driver Joshua Bakacheza, 28, abducted in Harare three weeks ago and later found dead.

Bakacheza and another MDC driver were abducted on a highway near Harare and his body was found in a forest in Beatrice, a town about 30 kilometers south of Harare.

The MDC believes he was abducted by ruling ZANU-PF party militia members in the course of the wave of political violence that followed national elections on March 29. Many observers including Human Rights Watch have said the violence was state-sponsored.

Vice President Thokozani Khupe of the MDC formation led by Morgan Tsvangirai, Organizing Secretary Elias Mudzuri and ordinary party members attended the burial.

MDC Information Officer Luke Tamborinyoka told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that Banket community members turned out in their hundreds to bid Bakacheza farewell.
