With 750% Pay Increase In Hand, Zimbabwe Teachers Ending Strike

The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe said it is instructing its members to get back to work following a government promise of a 750% increase in pay to settle a strike that has crippled the national educational system since February.

Entry-level teachers now earn Z$3.9 billion a month, or a little over US$100. The highest paid teachers will now be earning Z$5.7 billion a month.

Progressive Teachers Union President Takavafira Zhou told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that while their members accepted the pay rise, they will demand a minimum of Z$10 billion beginning in April.
