With a new school term starting Tuesday and teachers threatening a strike, the Zimbabwean government offered instructors an immediate 1,000 % pay hike.
The first half of the new salaries will be paid this week and and the balance at the end of the month. The starting salary for a teacher is now Z$260 million $US$130) a month, including Z$78 million for transport and $30 million for housing.
Zimbabwe Teachers Association President Tendai Chikowore said she could not give details of the deal, but confirmed the government proposed to raise salaries.
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe General Secretary Raymond Majongwe told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that the increase should have come last November, and in the meantime hyperinflation has already eaten into teacher salary gains.
