Zimbabwe's Ghetto Basketball Season Kicks Off In Harare Sunday

The sports spotlight this weekend is on the suburb of Dzivarasekwa where the Harare Basketball Association season kicks off with the Ghetto League first round.

Now in its sixth year, the league runs for the next five weeks including teams from high-density suburbs such as Mufakose, Dzivarasekwa, Mbare, Glen View, Glen Norah and Mabvuku, as well as Chitungwiza, Arcadia and Mabelreign.

After playing in Dzivarasekwa Sunday, teams will draw into groups and play round robin matches leading to finals at Harare City Center in October.

Ghetto League Chairman Tendai Barnes Zhakata tells reporter Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that he is pleased with the Z$500 million (US$2,000) sponsorship deal he has lined up for this year’s competitions.
