Zimbabwean Sprinters Nyongani, Dzingai, Advance In Osaka Events

Zimbabwean 400 hundred meter sprinter Young Talkmore Nyongani and 200 meter specialist Brian Dzingai posted season best times Tuesday to advance to the semi-finals in their events in the World Track Championships in Osaka, Japan.

Zimbabwe Olympic Committee Treasurer Thabani Gonye, who once trained the two, told reporter Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that he is impressed with both performances as they will inspire others to excel in athletics.

Despite the good news from Osaka, Zimbabwean athletes face challenges in getting ready for the 2008 Beijing Olympics due to the country's economic distress.

Gonye said poor sponsorship is hampering progress toward Beijing by many athletes.

Web news agency ZimOnline reported Wednesday that Dzingai finished sixth in in the first 200 meter semi-final heat in Osaka, which was won by Jamaican Usain Bolt, while Nyongani finished last in his 400 meter semi-final heat.
