Released On Bail, Zimbabwe Student Activist Charges Police Brutality

Police in Zimbabwe's second-largest city of Bulawayo released student leader Clever Bere of the National University of Science and Technology following three days in detention during which the activist charged Friday he was severely tortured.

Bere, who faces charges of destroying university property in May and June, contempt of court and evasion of arrest, was released on bail and remanded until September.

He was treated by a doctor before his bail hearing at the order of the magistrate.

Information Secretary Themba Maphenduka of the NUST Students Union told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that when police brought Bere to court his face was swollen and he had difficulty walking.
