Barclays Zimbabwe Sets Pace For HIV Programs In the Workplace

A recent survey by Zimbabwe's National AIDS Council found that 80% of the country's private companies lack strong HIV-AIDS policies, NAC officials told the parliamentary health committee, and most businesses do not see the pandemic as a priority.

So Zimbabwe's Barclays Bank stands out as an organization with a comprehensive policy not only on HIV-AIDS but on diabetes, high blood pressure and other illnesses.

Barclays approach to HIV in the workplace earned the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce's award for Best HIV Employer Management Program in 2006.

One purpose of the award is to underscore the impact of HIV on business results, according to ZNCC President Mara Hativagone.

Reporter Ndimyake Mwakalyelye spoke with Barclays Communications and Community Manager Sibhongile Mapungwana about the program.
