Zimbabwe's Mwana Africa Wins Local Tourney, Eyes Angola Match

Zimbabwe's Mwana Africa soccer team claimed its first major trophy – and a prize of Z$25 million or some US$3,500 – over the weekend by besting Highlanders in the finals of the Nestle Charity Shield tourney at Barbourfields Stadium, Bulawayo.

Despite what spectators considered lackluster performances by the two sides, Mwana Africa held Highlanders to a 0-0- for a 3-0 win on aggregate based on its first-round victory over the reigning champions of Zimbabwe's Premier Soccer League.

The victory bodes well for Mwana Africa’s prospects in its CAF Confederation Cup match against Interclube of Angola at Rufaro Stadium, Harare, on Sunday.

Reporter Marvellous Mhlanga Nyahuye of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe asked Mwana Africa midfielder Benjamin Marere, responsible for one of the first-round goals, about the game that clinched the Nestle Charity Shield title for his team.
