Opthamologist Urges Zimbabweans to Take Steps to Preserve Vision

Zimbabwe eye specialist Dr. Solomon Guramatunhu said on Tuesday, World Diabetes Day, that many Zimbabweans are losing their vision needlessly because they do not realize that diabetes is the leading cause of blindness among those under 65.

Dr. Guramatunhu said thousands of Zimbabweans lose their vision unnecessarily for lack of care. He is founder and chairman of Eyes for Africa, whose doctors and nurses treat an average of 120 disadvantaged people monthly in the country's rural areas.

Speaking from Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States, where he was attending the American Academy of Opthamology's annual conference, Dr. Guramatunhu told VOA reporter Carole Gombakomba of Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that there is no need for people to go blind if they seek medical assistance on time.
