Ex-Zimbabwean Cricketer Faces Arson Charges In Academy Fire

Former Zimbabwean cricket player Mark Vermeulen, arrested for arson in connection with the burning Tuesday night of the CFX Zimbabwe Cricket Academy in Harare, was to appear in court on Wednesday for arraignment and a bail hearing.

His brother, Roland Vermeulen, said Mark Vermeulen had been incarcerated since late Tuesday after being taken into custody by police at the family home at 10 p.m. that night. The family will seek his release on bail at Wednesday's hearing.

Sports reporter Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe spoke with Roland Vermeulen about his brother's situation.

Dynamos Football Club has fired defender David Kutyauripo for allegedly undermining discipline by inciting other players to complain about compensation. Fired along with Kutyauripo were fellow Dynamos Givemore Manuella and Benard Benesi, accused of organizing a player sit-in at Raylton Sports Club on Tuesday.

Dynamos has forbidden the three men to speak with former teammates.

Kutyauripo told reporter Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye that he believes this ban on contact with Dynamos infringes on his right of association.
