Racially Abused Zimbabwean Soccer Player To Stay At Serbian Club

Despite his racial taunting on Saturday by fans of his Borac soccer club, striker Mike Temwanjira says he wants to help the Serbian team contend for its division title.

The former Zimbabwean national team and Caps United player says he was moved by the support he received from his current coach at Borac and his former mates at Caps United following the incident in the Serbian city of Cacak. Police there arrested 37 fans who disrupted the game with racial taunts just 10 minutes into the game. The youths wore disguises reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan, the U.S. white supremacist group.

Reporter Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe asked the player about the experience and how it has affected him and his family.

Serbian soccer commentator Aleksandar Stojanovic of the B92 television channel said he and many other Serbians felt ashamed to hear of such behavior.
