At least 10 Zimbabweans were said to have drowned while trying to cross the flooded Limpopo River into South Africa during the night of Friday to Saturday, Jan. 13-14.
South African media reports said as many as 15 would-be immigrants were feared dead. But the South African- based Zimbabwe Support Action Group, an émigré organization based in Johannesburg, said it had only verified 10 deaths.
Support Action Group member Rogers Mdarikwa told reporter Chris Gande of VOA’s Studio 7 for Zimbabwe he had gleaned details from the ‘border jumping” specialists who were paid to help the Zimbabweans cross the river into South Africa.
