Zimbabwe Cholera Outbreak Claims 14 Lives

Despite government efforts to contain an outbreak of cholera in Chivu province, the death toll had risen to 14 by Wednesday, according to news reports.

Health Minister David Parirenyatwa told VOA’s Studio 7 for Zimbabwe on Tuesday that authorities had set up a treatment camp to assist those suffering from diarrhea which is one of the main symptoms of the often-deadly gastrointestinal disease.

But some doctors, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a shortage of doctors in the province could be hampering efforts to contain the outbreak.

Studio 7 reporter Carole Gombakomba obtained details on the situation in Chikomba, a district of Chivu, from local opposition politician Pinial Denga, who unsuccessfully sought the parliamentary seat for Chikomba in March general elections.
