Zimbabwe's Mugabe Scoffs at Rumors of his Death

Press Secretary George Charamba said today (Tuesday) he told Mr. Mugabe about the rumors, and that the president laughed, asking him when and where he had died.

Mr. Charamba said the president is "fit as a teenager", and that anyone doubting that can see Mr. Mugabe when he delivers an address to parliament Thursday.

Rumors had spread in the streets of Harare that Mr. Mugabe had died last week of heart failure. The talk came as opposition groups plan a work stoppage for later this week to protest Zimbabwe's campaign against street traders and shack dwellers.

The United Nations estimates some 200-thousand people have been evicted by Zimbabwean police since May 23rd.
