Adjudication is in progress in the hut painting competition run by Amagugu International Heritage Center aimed at preserving a diminishing hamlet decoration tradition still practiced in Zimbabwe.
Center director Phathisa Nyathi says the painting tradition is almost disappearing, a situation which prompted the center to engage various companies, the Art Gallery in Bulawayo and the National University of Science and Technology to revive it. Nyathi says two wards in Matobo district, Matabeleland South province, were selected for launching the competition which will be nationalized in the near future. A certain type of mud is used to paint traditional huts.
