100 Houses Collapse as Heavy Rains Pound Dete

More than 100 houses in Dete’s Mutuya township have been destroyed by heavy rains pounding Matabeleland North province, leaving large numbers of families homeless.

Residents who spoke to VOA Studio 7 said they need urgent help as they are currently living in the open and have run out of food supplies as their food reserves were also soaked in rains.

One of them, Thembinkosi Ndlovu, said the government should use money generated from CAMPFIRE projects to assist them in building new houses.

Ndlovu says CAMPFIRE funds should be used for such purposes instead of enriching few people.

We also spoke to another Dete resident, Stanely Torima, who said residents of Mutuya township are desperate for help.

Local parliamentary representative Molly Mnkandla said she was not in a position to comment as she was attending an important workshop. She is believed to be engaging government on this issue.
