Occupy Africa Unity Square member, Tichaona Danho, who was arrested Wednesday for allegedly insulting a policeman over the disappearance of activist Itai Dzamara, was released from police custody Friday afternoon pending a police investigation.
According to fellow Occupy Africa Unity Square member Steven Sibanda, police said they were releasing Danho but will continue investigating the incident.
“He was supposed to appear in court in the morning but circumstances leading to his arrest were not as clear as they wanted them to be," said Sibanda.
"When we arrived at court police decided to withdraw the case, saying they want to further investigate.”
Prior to the planned court appearance police had told Danho he’d be ordered to pay a $10 fine, but he refused saying he would rather be taken to court.
Meanwhile, indications are that one of the members of the organization, Charles Nyoni, was arrested Friday afternoon at Harare Remand Prison where he had visited locked up vendors’ leaders.
There was no immediate comment from the police.
Nyoni was part of civic society organizations that visited the vendors' leaders currently incarcerated, calling for their immediate and unconditional release
Sibanda said the arrests of Occupy Africa Unity Square members seem to be a deliberate move to destabilize the group that has been calling on President Robert Mugabe to step down saying he has failed to run the country.
