Women’s soccer in Zimbabwe received a major boost from the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe this week as the institution pledged Z$1.5 billion (about US$20,000) to finance a 2007 CBZ Football Association Cup that will include female teams.
CBZ Holdings Managing director John Mangudya announced the sponsorship late Tuesday at a ceremony in Harare. The tournament will kick off on June 23.
Sports observers said the expanded funding will bolster local teams.
Commentator Wellington Dangarembizi told reporter Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe he wished other firms would follow CBZ’s example.
