Dissident Zimbabwe Cricket Player Urges New Zealand Boycott

A former member of the Zimbabwe cricket squad who went into exile in London has traveled to New Zealand to urge that country’s cricket authorities to call off a team visit to ZImbabwe scheduled to take place in August.

Former rebel cricketer Henry Olanga was invited to New Zealand by the Green Party, which is campaigning for the Zimbabwe tour to be canceled. Mr. Olanga also came out with remarks critical of the International Cricket Council, saying it lacked compassion for the victims of human rights abuses in Zimbabwe.

Sports reporter Marvellous Nyahuye of VOA’s Studio 7 for Zimbabwe spoke with former Zimbabwean journalist Madhla Dube, who now lives in Christchurch, New Zealand, about the potential impact of Mr. Olanga’s visit on the debate.
