African Union Refers Crackdown to Human Rights Body

The African Union said it was not ready as an institution to respond to situations like the Zimbabwean government crackdown on informal businesses and homes deemed to be illegally constructed. The African Union is just two and a half years old and lacks the means to address all of Africa’s problems, said its acting head of communications, Desmond Orjiako. He told VOA’s Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that the AU must prioritize and leave issues like Murambatsvina to other AU entities – in this case its Commission on Human and People’s Rights.

African Union Acting Head of Communications Desmond Orjiako spoke with reporter Ndimyake Mwakalyele of VOA’s Studio 7 for Zimbabwe from the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
