Cracks continue to widen in Zanu-PF even after President Robert Mugabe on Thursday read the riot act to his members and set up a committee to probe factionalism in the party ahead of its make or break elective congress in December.

Mr. Mugabe, in his party’s politburo meeting Thursday, recommended the setting up of a committee to probe Vice President Joice Mujuru and Justice Minister Emerson Mnangagwa, the two alleged factional leaders in the party.

Zanu-PF insiders said that those aligned to Mr. Mnangagwa are moving in to suspend provincial chairpersons said to be aligned to the Mujuru faction.

War veterans leader Jabulani Sibanda is one of those being targeted for removal from his position for allegedly failing to endorse First Lady Grace Mugabe to lead the Women’s League and criticizing Mrs. Mugabe for staging a “bedroom coup.”

Party spokesman Rugare Gumbo told Studio 7 that the probe team is yet to be set up by Mr. Mugabe.

Political analyst and board member of the Zimbabwe Democracy Institute Rashweat Mukundu says the probe team will not resolve the Zanu-PF crisis if it skirts the succession issue.
