Disgruntled Zimbabwe Civil Servants Fail to Meet, Strike Put on Hold

Representatives of government workers failed to meet as arranged Tuesday as some of them did not turn up for a meeting called to press the Zimbabwe government to address outstanding issues, change in pay dates and a proposed strike.

Apex Council member, Sifiso Ndlovu of the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (ZIMTA), says the meeting was meant to get a feedback from members after unions met a fortnight ago and agreed to consult their members first before making any decision.

Ndlovu says some unions had already declared that the issue of a strike was not an appropriate weapon to use and the timing would not really yield any good results.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe secretary general Raymond Majongwe says he was disappointed that some unions decided to boycott the meeting yet they claim to represent workers.

Majongwe, who claims that the meeting venue at the Public Service Association was locked, says he was surprised that only the Apex Council chairman, Richard Gundani, showed up.

“Our suspicions became clearer that there was a meeting that was held and people agreed and connived they were not going to attend this meeting."
