The National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) party Friday filed a court application challenging the appointment of two vice presidents by President Robert Mugabe, who fired his deputy Joice Mujuru, claiming that she wanted to topple him.

NCA spokesperson Madock Chivasa says his party further argued in its papers about the constitutionality of assigning Vice President Mnangagwa to the post of justice minister.

Chavasa says they believe that Mr. Mugabe had no right to appoint Mnangagwa and career diplomat Phelekezela Mphoko, arguing that he should have only appointed one deputy instead of two vice presidents.

The NCA is citing some provisions of the constitution which compel the president to appoint his deputies without delay after a general national election.

Chivasa says they have a strong case against the president.

Some constitutional law experts have also noted that the NCA has a strong case while others have dismissed it as lacking judicial merit.
