Thousands of workers continue losing jobs in Zimbabwe following a Supreme Court ruling allowing employers to fire them.
Trade unionist, Percy Mcijo, says the situation is getting out of hand in cities like Bulawayo, Gweru and Harare.
“The situation is worse in Bulawayo as you may know that the city has more unemployed people than any other part of the country. So, employers are taking advantage of the situation to get rid of workers … some of them have not been paid for three years,” he said.
Mcijo noted that trade unionists should push for new legislation to stop the work terminations, which started on Friday last week soon after the Supreme Court ruling that allows employers to give workers only a three-month notice to get rid of them.
The court’s ruling was based on some provisions of the country’s Labour Act.
Over 4,000 workers have lost their jobs since the court made the ruling a week ago which only compels employers to give a worker a three-month notice to terminate their contracts.
