Primary and Secondary Education Minister Lazarus Dokora says the government has enrolled 200 some Zimbabweans to train as teachers at Great Zimbabwe University who will be expected to teach minority languages.
Dokora told journalists in Harare recently that these candidates will teach Venda, Tonga, Shangaan, Nambya and Kalanga after graduating from the university.
He said they are part of the ministry’s capacity development programme, designed to boost the teaching of minority languages in the country.
The teachers will be tasked with introducing minority language curricula up to Grade seven. There are currently no final examinations graded by the Ministry of Education for these minority languages.
Zimbabwe’s constitution recognizes 16 minority languages.
English, Shona and IsiNdebele have been the major languages used at primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.
