The Information and Media Panel of Inquiry (IMPI) outreach program led by veteran journalist Geoff Nyarota, continued in Mutare for the second day Tuesday with an encouraging turnout, according to the IMPI boss.

Nyarota, who could not be drawn into revealing the participants’ views, said many Zimbabweans turned out to discuss operations of the print and electronic media in the country.

Monday’s meeting in Rusape ended prematurely when Zanu PF secretary for labour and production in Manicaland Province, Nathan Mhiripiri, accused the panel of holding meetings in his province without notifying him.

Mhiripiri also accused Nyarota, who contested and lost in Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change primary elections ahead of last year’s elections, of furthering MDC-T’s interests using the program. Studio 7 failed to get a comment from Mhiripiri.

The panel is expected to gather information on various issues affecting media operations in the country.

The 28 member-panel will Wednesday be in Chimanimani and Masvingo on Thursday.

Nyarota said he is not worried about those who are opposing his leading the panel, adding that those who gave him the mandate to do the job were aware of what happened during the elections.
