European football superpower Germany beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday to lift the 2014 World Cup.
German substitute and FC Bayern Muenchen player, Mario Goetze, hit the stunning goal in the second half of extra time to relegate Argentina to the second position of the tournament.
The teams were tied 0-0 in regulation time in a match that appeared to have been fairly balanced.
Argentina and Germany have met twice in the World Cup title game. Argentina won in 1986, and the Germans lifted the coveted trophy in 1990.
No European team has ever won a World Cup championship in the seven times the tournament has been played in the Americas. A South American team has prevailed each time.
