Mixed Feelings Over Zimbabwe's New Policy to Re-Educate Teachers

The government says it is working with donors to fund the programme, and has already sent circulars to school authorities to compile the list of targeted teachers

Teachers have expressed mixed feelings on the government’s new policy to compel those who failed Mathematics, Science, and English subjects at Ordinary Level to re-write the examinations in a move meant to improve the quality of education in the country.

The government says it is working with donors to fund the programme, and has already sent circulars to school authorities to compile the list of targeted teachers.

Never Nyahunzvi, provincial coordinator of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe in Matabeleland North told Studio 7 the circular further stipulates that the national syllabus will be changed in a few months and teachers who fail to comply with the new requirements may be replaced.

Nyahunzvi says it will not be easy for teachers who have been in the profession for more than 20 years teaching subjects such as History and English in secondary schools, to begin learning Maths and Science.

However, educationist Felix Magalela Mafa says the move is a good start, but it should be complemented with improved working conditions and salaries for teachers.

Mafa said the government should also ensure that teachers are competent with local languages of communities where they teach to effectively improve the pass rate in the country.
