Zanu PF has over the years struggled to get seats in Matabeleland region, especially Bulawayo.

Party members were in an urgent meeting Wednesday evening to decide if they should contest the elections as independent candidates or as United MDC, which is the name registered with ZEC.

The Zanu PF Bulawayo province Wednesday finalized its list of five candidates who will contest in the parliamentary by-elections, scheduled for 10 June, ahead of the sitting of the nomination court Thursday.

Bulawayo is the only province in the country in which to date, the ruling party has never won a parliamentary seat since the 2002 harmonized elections, since the formation of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in 1999.

Some MDC-T members have reportedly protested the party’s decision to boycott the by-elections nationally, and believe some parliamentary seats, especially in the party’s strongholds, will be merely “donated” to Zanu PF.

The Zanu PF parliamentary candidates in Bulawayo are Ntandoyenkosi Mlilo, Joseph Tshuma, Godfrey Malaba, Maidei Mpala, and Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube who will contest in Luveve, Pelandaba-Mpopoma, Pumula, Lobengula, and Makokoba respectively.

Dube told VOA Studio 7 his party is headed for victory.

Meanwhile, former MDC-T members who formed the Renewal Team attended an urgent meeting Wednesday evening to decide if they should contest the elections as independents or as United MDC, which is the name registered with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

Party official Albert Mhlanga, who will contest in Pumula in Bulawayo, said whatever the outcome of the meeting, his party has resolved that the former legislators, who were recently expelled from parliament, will contest in their previous constituencies.
