President Robert Mugabe left Zimbabwe on Tuesday to visit the Southern African Development Community (SADC) headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana, as a routine requirement for chairpersons of the regional block during their tenure.

Presidential spokesman George Charamba told the state-controlled Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation that President Mugabe is expected to address staff at the SADC headquarters and also meet President Ian Khama.

Earlier, Mr. Mugabe, who is also the African Union chairman, met the African Union (AU) Commission chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, who was in the country to consult on preparations for the oncoming African Union summit, which will be held next month in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Addressing journalists after the meeting Monday, Dlamini-Zuma said the summit, which will he held under the theme: “Year of Women Empowerment and development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063,” will address issues including the crisis in Burundi, Somalia, and Mali.

However, political analyst Rejoice Ngwenya told VOA Studio 7 the AU is not effective in addressing Africa’s problems.
