Leaders of various churches are calling for a stiff sentence, as the state has set January 8th as judgment day for a minister of religion who allegedly raped seven members of his congregation.

Harare regional magistrate, Hosea Mujaya, on Friday remanded Robert Martin Gumbura in custody saying he will deliver his judgment on that day.

The state claims that Gumbura, who has 11 wives, raped the women many times before he was arrested. It further claims that he threatened the victims with death or to be committed to the devil if they left his church – the Independent End Times Message.

The court also heard that Gumbura’s wives wrote him letters begging to watch television as he ran his families with an iron fist.

Several ministers of religion told VOA Studio 7 Gumbura should get a stiff sentence if found guilty by the courts.

Leader of the Foundation of Life Ministries International, Median Dube, said such people need to face the laws of the land.

"We pray that such issues should not happen in churches. The case of Gumbura is a disappointing case to the family of God. I think the simple fact that he is married to more than one wife actually puts a lot of questions as to whether he understands the word that he is supposed to preach," said Dube.
