Lifespan of Zimbabwe Unity Government's Watchdog Expires

The Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee (JOMIC), that was set up under the Global Political Agreement that gave birth to the unity government in 2009, is expected to wind down its activities at the end of this month.

Sources close to JOMIC said this would coincide with the date the current constitution is set to cease to operate and the formation of a new Zanu PF government.

JOMIC co-chairman Elton Mangoma of the MDC-T formation confirmed that the committee’s mandate is in the old constitution under Amendment Number 19 and not in the new constitution.

Mangoma said JOMIC co-chairpersons are yet to discuss the issue of the organization’s assets, but he hopes they will agree to let it continue operating as it has been effective in reducing politically-motivated violence.

Mangoma said he also hopes the committee will be allowed to discuss the just-ended elections report it compiled.

Studio 7 failed to reach Zanu PF co-chairman Nicholas Goche and MDC’s Priscilla Misihairambwi-Mushonga.
