Zimbabwe Police Arrest MDC-T Youth Leader


The MDC-T said police are alleging the youth leader made insulting remarks about President Mugabe while addressing a party rally in Mbire, Mashonaland Central

Police in Harare on Thursday arrested Solomon Madzore, the National youth chairman of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) formation of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, on charges of undermining the office of the president.

Lawyer Charles Kwaramba of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights confirmed Madzore’s arrest to VOA Studio 7.

In a statement, the MDC-T said police are alleging the youth leader made insulting remarks about President Mugabe while addressing a party rally in Mbire, Mashonaland Central.

The party’s youth assembly secretary general Promise Mkhwanzi said Madzore is still being questioned at Bindura Police Station where he was transferred to by the Harare Police.

Meanwhile, police officers in riot gear Wednesday night allegedly assaulted revellers watching the UEFA champions league soccer match between Barcelona and Bayern Munich at Mapanzure business centre in Masvingo following a poorly-attended Zanu PF rally at the centre in the afternoon.

Ten teachers were injured in the process at Olando Nite Inn where the match was being screened. One of the victims, a teacher and aspiring MDC-T parliamentary candidate in the area, Hardlife Janyure, said the police officers wantonly beat them up.
