A building belonging to Movement for Democratic Change 99 leader, Job Sikhala, was early Tuesday morning destroyed by fire at Huruyadzo Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza in a suspected case of arson.

Forensic experts have been deployed to investigate the cause of the fire.

Sikhala told VOA Studio 7 property worth more than $10,000 was destroyed in the fire he alleges was started by his political foes.

Sikhala said he was alerted of the fire in the early hours of the morning. Security guards and others tried to put out the fire before the police and fire brigade arrived, some thirty minutes later.

He alleges the burning of the building was an attack meant to strangle him economically so that he is unable to finance his political activities.

Sikhala and his MDC 99 and civil society groups such as the National Constitutional Assembly and the International Socialist Organization campaigned against the new draft constitution which received massive support in a referendum two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, High Court judge justice Chinembiri Bhunu will Wednesday make a ruling on a bail application by Thabani Mpofu and three staff members from the prime minister’s office, who are facing charges of illegally investigating senior government officials.

Justice Bhunu took over the case after justice Joseph Musakwa recused himself saying three of the accused worked directly under him when he was director of prosecutions.

The four were denied bail by a magistrates court which said they were a flight risk since they are facing serious charges.
