Popular Harare football club, Caps United, are this year being honest with their fans and are not promising them heaven on earth.

Although Caps are ranked among the top three teams in Zimbabwean football behind Dynamos and Highlanders, they are this year, not setting themselves high goals. They have set a modest target of a top eight finish in the 16 team assembly.

Team coach Mkhupali Masuku said the club would be happy and comfortable with a top eight finish although he would like to win the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title and the Mbada Diamond Cup, the only two competitions in Zimbabwean football.

The green machine have in the past two years promised their fans a lot only to deliver very little. Last season, the club could only finish in 10th position with 39 points from 30 games. They finished 30 points behind bitter rivals and champions, Dynamos, sending their fans into mourning.

Masuku, a former Highlanders player and coach revealed that he has retained most of the players who served the club last season among them Pride Tafirenyika, Clive Kawinga, Hardlife Zvirekwi, and Tapuwa Khumbayani , who have featured for different national teams adding that he will add guile to the team with new acquisitions.

Over 40 players were on Thursday at the team’s training ground undergoing trials with Masuku saying the club is very much interested in younger players ideally between the ages of 19 to 20.

Masuku’s assistant Brenna Msiska, one of Caps United’s most famous sons, said so far everything is going very well at the club.

Among those in training was seasoned former Kiglon, Monomotapa and Motor Action striker Tawanda Nyamandwe who also played for the Zimbabwe senior national team, the Warriors.

Masuku, who was an assistant coach at the green machine, is now the head coach following the five-year ban imposed on Taurai Mangwiro for his involvement in the Asiagate match-fixing scandal.

Caps are every year one of the teams expected to be challenging for honours but last won the league championship in 2005 under the coaching guidance of Charles Mhlauri who has relocated to the USA.

Since then, it has been dreaming of the league title and the random hiring and firing of coaches.
