ZUJ Secretary General Foster Dongozi said the conference discussed media coverage of women and children’s issues, which in most cases are negatively portrayed in the media.

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) Friday convened a three-day Southern African Development Community (SADC) Regional Stakeholders’ Conference on Media, Gender, and Children’s Rights in Harare to promote media coverage of issues aimed at ending discrimination and abuse of women and children in the region.

ZUJ Secretary General Foster Dongozi said the conference discussed media coverage of women and children’s issues, which in most cases are negatively portrayed in the media.

Dongozi said these included issues like women receiving less pay than their male counterparts for the same job, even when they have similar qualifications and experience for the work.

He said the conference would lead to the creation of a regional council on gender for lobbying countries within SADC to implement its resolutions.

The conference, which ends on Sunday, is being attended by delegates from Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, and Angola.
