Zimbabwe Rolls Out Door-to-Door HIV Testing and Counseling Program

Health Minister Henry Madzorera told reporters that the national door-to-door campaign will help the government roll out programs to mitigate the personal and societal effects of HIV infection

The Zimbabwean Ministry of Health said Wednesday that it will soon roll out a door-to-door HIV/Aids testing and counseling program so all citizens can determine their status.

Health Minister Henry Madzorera told reporters that a door-to-door campaign will help the government roll out programs to mitigate the personal and societal effects of HIV.

He said the HIV/Aids and tuberculosis unit in his ministry is training volunteers to carry out the project for voluntary testing accompanied by counseling.

Madzorera said the program would allow many people who cannot travel long distances to be tested and obtain counseling, with drugs and family support made available to them.

National Aids Council Chief Executive Officer Dr. Tapuwa Magure told VOA reporter Sandra Nyaira that the door-to-door campaign is a step in the right direction.

But HIV consultant Monica Mandiki said issues of confidentiality and disclosure among others will present major challenges to the campaign.
