Zimbabwe Youth Not Getting State Funds

The Zimbabwe Youth Council says it is not happy that funds allocated to the youth in the country’s national budgets are not reaching their intended beneficiaries.

The deputy director of the Zimbabwe Youth Council, Tawanda Njerere, told VOA Studio 7 his organization is happy that funds that were set aside for youth development programs were not allocated to the youth despite having been set aside by Treasury in national budget allocations.

Njerere said the regulating authority for all organizations working with the youth countrywide is concerned that even funds that were allocated during the tenure of Tendai Biti as finance minister have also not reached several youths in the country with the funds being channeled elsewhere by authorities.

Studio 7 failed to get a comment from Youth Minister Francis Nhema but for its part, government has set up a youth fund that allows them to access loans from some banks after their project proposals have been approved by the youth ministry.

But MDC-T general secretary of the youth assembly, Promise Mkwananzi, said the fund is being abused by Zanu PF.

Zanu PF officials were not available for comment.

Njerere said as a result of the failure by authorities, many youths are resorting to drug abuse and other criminal activities.

Official figures show that most of those that are unemployed are youths.
