The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) says Zimbabweans living outside the country are not eligible to vote in national polls.

Addressing journalists in Harare on Tuesday, ZEC chairperson Rita Makarau said the Electoral Act does not have a provision giving Zimbabweans living in the diaspora permission to vote in local elections.

Makarau said Zimbabweans living in the diaspora can only vote if the law is changed, adding that voting in the country is conducted on the basis of registering on the voters’ roll.

As a result, she said, it is difficult for people living in the diaspora to be catered for under the current laws.

Zimbabweans living outside the country have been urging the government to allow them to vote in national.
