Residents of Kariba in Mashonalnd West province are happy that a local team, Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) Kariba, will this year be part of Zimbabwe’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

The residents are still celebrating the promotion of ZPC from Division One, which graced the premier league a few weeks ago.

ZPC Kariba are the first team from the town to achieve premiership status since 1962 when top flight football was introduced in the country.

Not only are football fans celebrating, but the whole town as other people are also looking at some accruing benefits as thousands of fans are expected to flock to Kariba from different parts of the country to root for their teams.

Local resident, Simbarashe Matonho, is charmed with the business prospects that will come with ZPC’s promotion.

Another resident, Marita Sunga, says she is happy about the promotion of ZPC Kariba as it will help to sell the town’s name.

Football fans, though, are happy that the promotion of ZPC will give them the opportunity to watch the best footballers from all parts of the country.

ZPC Kariba supporter, Peter Shumba, can no longer wait for the next soccer season as he thinks that the local team has the power to bring down giants like Dynamos and Highlanders.

Coach Jostein Mathuthu, who has also had stints with Lengthens and Shooting Stars, says ZPC Kariba are not in the premiership to make up the numbers but to challenge for honours.

But Mathuthu is warning the team not to follow in the same path with the likes of Hardbody, Kambuzuma, Tripple B, and Underhill who were relegated in their first year of premiership football.
