Zimbabwean Police Continue to Hold 13 Arrested at Weekend Prayer Meeting

Officials with the Christian Alliance, which organized the prayer vigil called to seek peace in the politically divided nation, said some of those held, including two pastors, were beaten

Zimbabwean police in Harare on Monday continued to hold 13 people detained Saturday in a police raid on a prayer meeting in the capital, sources said.

Officials with the Christian Alliance, which organized the prayer vigil called to seek peace in the politically divided nation, said some of those held, including two pastors, were beaten.

The Movement for Democratic Change formation of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said member Shakespeare Mukoyi, feared abducted from the church in the Glen Norah section of Harare raided by police, was located Monday at the Harare Remand Prison.

An MDC statement said Mukoyi had been badly beaten while in police hands.

Christian Alliance of Zimbabwe National Director Useni Sibanda told VOA Studio 7 reporter Chris Gande that police intend to charge those held with causing violence.
