WASHINGTON DC —
The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Morgan Tsvangirai says the former prime minister is the only opposition leader capable of removing President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF party from power though his critics and rivals dismiss him as an uneducated and a “care-free” individual.
In an in-depth interview, MDC-T deputy spokesman Joel Gabhuza of Binga, which is one of Tsvangirai’s strongholds in Zimbabwe, said the majority of local people believe that “no-one can remove Mugabe from power without Tsvangirai who is currently the face of the opposition in the country.”
Gabhuza said critics, who claim that Tsvangirai is too uneducated to run Zimbabwe and that he is a womanizer, are entitled to their opinion “but the truth is that he is the only one capable of removing Mugabe from power.”
On remarks by the leader of the other MDC faction, Professor Welshman Ncube, that Tsvangirai is a weak leader who can’t head an opposition coalition in the run-up to the 2018 general poll to challenge President Mugabe’s party, he said Ncube “should not start selecting leaders since he is an interested party”.
Gabhuza, who was interviewed before the Tendai Biti faction suspended Tsvangirai on from the party on Saturday, further said internal efforts to remove Tsvangirai as leader of the MDC-T "are doomed as the powerful secretary general Tendai Biti is not part of the leadership renewal agenda."
