Zimbabwe Farm Workers Union to Seek Relief on Rights in Regional Tribunal

The union said it will ask the SADC tribunal to compel the Harare government to halt violations of the rights of farm workers, which it says have increased this year as farm invasions have stepped up

The General Agriculture and Plantation Workers Union of Zimbabwe says it will take its grievances regarding alleged human rights abuses to the Southern African Development Community tribunal when it next sits in March.

The union said it will ask the tribunal to compel the Zimbabwean government to halt violations of the human and civil rights of farm workers, which it says have increased this year as farm invasions have stepped up.

Gapwuz spokesman Tapiwa Zivira told VOA Studio 7 reporter Patience Rusere that the organization is looking to the Namibia-based tribunal because its requests for action by Harare have fallen on deaf ears.
