Striking Zimbabwe Civil Servants March in Harare, Threaten Tougher Action

Zimbabwe Teachers Association President Tendai Chikowore, head of the Apex Council coordinating negotiations with the government, said the council resolved that civil servants should stage sit-ins at their workplaces starting Monday

Zimbabwean civil servants marched Friday through central Harare calling for salary increases, submitting petitions to parliament and the government.

VOA Studio 7 correspondent Thomas Chiripasi reported that Zimbabwe Teachers Association President Tendai Chikowore, head of the Apex Council coordinating negotiations with the government, said the council resolved that civil servants should stage sit-ins at their workplaces starting Monday.

National Constitutional Assembly Director Ernest Mudzengi told VOA Studio 7 reporter Patience Rusere that the strike reflects the government’s failure to make good on its promise to raise living standards, and that civil servants like many other Zimbabweans are becoming disillusioned with the government.
